Plasterer (Level 3)

Plasterer's Certificate · Vocational Qualification Certificate

Plasterer's certificate what is it?

The certificate commonly referred to as a "plasterer's certificate" is officially called the MYK Plasterer (Level 3) Vocational Qualification Certificate. It is obtained through an examination conducted by certification bodies authorized by the Vocational Qualifications Authority (MYK), according to the national qualification code 11UY0024-3.

The legal basis of the certificate is MYK Law No. 5544: persons without an MYK certificate cannot be employed in occupations that are classified as hazardous or very hazardous and listed in the communiqués published by the Ministry. Plasterers fall within this scope.

Which document Who needs it?

In the field of plastering, two separate obligations are confused:

The MYK Vocational Qualification Certificate is issued TO THE PERSON, while the obligation not to employ uncertified staff rests TO THE BUSINESS.

To work in this job, an MYK certificate is required; your employer cannot employ workers without this certificate. Both sides rely on the same certificate.

Which units does the certificate cover?

Exam requirements and common misconceptions

Misconception

"You need experience to take the exam."

Real
  • It's not necessary.
  • No prior experience or training is required to take the MYK Plasterer (Level 3) exam; entry requirements are not defined in the national qualification.
  • The certificate is obtained through passing an exam, not through a course.
Misconception

"Completing the course is mandatory to receive the certificate."

Real
  • There is no course completion requirement.
  • Courses can help with preparation; however, the certificate is obtained through an exam, not through a course.
  • There is nothing preventing a candidate who has not taken the course from passing the exam.
Misconception

"A mastery certificate and an MYK certificate are the same thing."

Real
  • These are certificates issued by different institutions.
  • A master craftsman certificate is issued by the Ministry of National Education under Law No. 3308 at the end of the apprenticeship-journeyman process; a Vocational Qualification Certificate issued by the Vocational Qualifications Authority (MYK) is obtained through an examination that has no prerequisites.
  • According to MYK, in occupations where a certificate is mandatory, a mastery certificate or a vocational-technical diploma issued IN THE RELEVANT FIELD also satisfies the work requirement.
  • If you do not hold a mastery certificate or diploma in the relevant field, the exam-based MYK certificate is the fastest way to meet this requirement.

Things you need to know

  • Passing all mandatory units is required: passing only one is not enough to obtain the certificate; you will have to retake the exam for any missing units.
  • In each unit, theoretical and performance exams are evaluated separately; to be considered successful in the unit, one must pass both types of exams.
  • The certificate requirement applies to the individual: your MYK certificate is required when you start work, and employers cannot employ uncertified staff.

Certification requirement: Scope of hazardous jobs

Plastering is among the professions for which an MYK certificate is mandatory. The correct order is as follows:

  • 1

Obtain the MYK Level 3 certificate.

You can obtain a Plasterer MYK Certificate from an Authorized Certification Body authorized by MYK and accredited by TÜRKAK (such as ADEN).

  • 2

Present your certificate to your employer

Employers cannot employ uncertified personnel in this profession, which falls under the category of hazardous work; your certificate will be included in your employment file.

  • 3

The validity period of the certificate is defined in the national qualification; renewal can be done with or without an exam before the expiration date.

When labour inspectors find that uncertified personnel are employed, an administrative sanction is imposed on the employer. The amount of the sanction is revalued every year; for the current amount, please refer to the announcements of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.

Frequently asked questions

Is this document mandatory?

According to the Vocational Qualifications Authority (MYK) Law No. 5544, individuals without an MYK Vocational Qualification Certificate cannot be employed in professions classified as hazardous and very hazardous, as specified in the communiqués published by the Ministry. Plasterers fall within this scope, and their qualification is regulated by 11UY0024-3.

Are a plasterer's certificate and a gypsum plastering certificate the same thing?

No. The plasterer qualification (11UY0024-3) covers traditional cement and lime-based plastering work. Gypsum plastering applications are regulated by a separate national qualification.

Is there a separate unit for applying plaster with a machine?

Yes. Machine Plastering (B1) is an elective unit. Exams are conducted for the compulsory units A1 and A2 within the scope of ADEN.

What does Level 3 mean?

The level indicates the level of knowledge, skills and responsibility required by the occupation. The Plasterer qualification describes an employee who can carry out their work independently and is defined at Level 3.

From which institution should this document be obtained?

The certificate can only be obtained from certification bodies authorized by MYK and accredited by TÜRKAK. ADEN is an authorized body in this context.

Are there any prerequisites for taking the exam?

No. The national qualification does not define any exam entry requirements; no experience, education, or course requirements are sought.

What kind of questions are asked in unit A1?

The work organisation and occupational health and safety unit assesses hazard sources, personal protective equipment, accident-causing behaviours, work area safety, work schedule and allocation of work, determining material quantities, quality requirements, waste management and professional development.

What kind of questions are asked in the A2 unit?

The plastering unit measures the following: sand sieving, lime and mortar preparation, surface inspection and repair, application of lath wire and plaster mesh, levelling, setting up plaster bays and screed rules, corner forming, spatterdash and rough plaster coats, fine plaster and finishing, thermally insulating and additive plasters, and plaster repair.

What happens if I fail a unit of the exam?

You only retake the unit you failed; the unit you passed remains valid for the period defined in the national qualification.

How is the performance exam conducted?

The performance exam is conducted in a real-world application environment. The candidate is asked to perform the procedural steps of the profession; these steps are evaluated according to a checklist.

What's included in the price?

Only the 15,000 TL exam fee is charged on application — the theoretical and performance exams are both included in this amount. If you pass and qualify for the certificate, the 1,500 TL certificate cost contribution paid to MYK is charged separately.

What happens if I fail?

You will not be eligible to receive the certificate; you will only be able to retake the exam for the unit you failed. Retake rights and fees are defined in the organization's fee schedule.

Is the exam online or in person?

Exams are conducted in person. In accordance with current MYK (Vocational Qualifications Authority) regulations, remote (online) exams are not held for this national qualification; theoretical and performance exams are conducted at an examination center/practice facility.
